Bustling Bangkok

With around 11 million tourists every year, Bangkok is the most visited city in the world, and one of the region’s most exciting capitals. It’s a bustling, vibrant, cosmopolitan metropolis which inspired some items on our menu. From its numerous markets and temples to its jungles, there’s so much to experience in Bangkok.  Here are a few facts about the city compiled by Hugo Chetcuti’s team that will hopefully inspire you to visit, or at least share to impress everyone around the dinner table at Bacco Sticks & Sum!

The longest city name in the world

Although the capital is known to the world as Bangkok, local people refer to it as Krung Thep; this is just a shortened version of the actual name which consists of 16 words (take a deep breath!) –  Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahinthara Yutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukamprasit. This roughly translates to: city of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Visvakarman at Indra’s behest.

Peculiar laws

Leaving the house without underwear in Bangkok can land you in jail, and so will using a durian fruit as a weapon or driving bare-chested. Stepping on Thai currency is also against the law as it carries an image of the King.

It’s a foodie paradise!

The bustling city has a mouth-watering culinary scene that has garnered much global recognition, including that of entrepreneur Hugo Chetcuti. Bangkok’s street food is an absolute must-try! There are street vendors everywhere you turn in Bangkok, serving anything imaginable at really cheap prices.

It is sinking

Like Venice, Bangkok is built over dozens of canals; unfortunately, just like its Italian counterpart, Bangkok is sinking due to rising sea levels and heavy development. With parts of the city estimated to be underwater within the next 15 years, we recommend visiting sooner rather than later!

Hugo Chetcuti invites you to get a taste of this wonderful city at Bacco Sticks & Sum, with our delicious Bangkok dish, consisting of marinated boneless chicken thighs with tamarind sauce. From dumplings and skewers to rice and noodle dishes, our menu is packed full with a variety of scrumptious Asian cuisine.
